Jewelry Care Tips
Caring For Jewelry
- Be gentle
- Avoid moisture
- Remove before swimming (especially chlorine) or showering, washing hands
- Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, body care products, and chemicals
- Store in air-tight bag or jewelry box to avoid oxidation (silver jewelry)
- Remove jewelry before going to bed
- Remove jewelry when participating in physical activities like sports and gardening
Cleaning Jewelry
- Put hot water into a small bowl, add capful of ammonia or liquid dish soap
- Add jewelry, let soak for 5 minutes
- Use a soft toothbrush or finger tips to very gently scrub jewelry (avoid scrubbing necklace chains-you can break them)
- Swish the piece around in the water
- Rinse with plain water and pat dry with lint free soft cloth
- If you are not wearing the piece right away, make sure it is completely dry before storing it.
If it’s a flat piece of jewelry, you can lay a towel down, place item on top, then another towel on top and lightly press (don’t scrub) to dab up excess moisture.
A special note on caring for Oxidized (black) Sterling Silver jewelry
Sterling Silver jewelry that has been intentionally oxidized to the color black requires different care.
To maintain the darkness as long as possible, do not polish or rub.
As hard as you try, the patina (oxidation) will eventually wear off any raised surfaces.
It will remain longer into recessed areas in jewelry creating a more antique look.
ABSOLUTELY do NOT use antibacterial products on your hands if you have a ring that is oxidized as it will strip the patina right off.
Yes, I will re-oxidize your jewelry for you, however I strongly encourage you to love the piece of jewelry you purchased through it’s evolution back to it’s natural state as much as possible for as long as possible :)
- Sterling silver naturally oxidizes when exposed to oxygen and with certain body chemistry requiring it to be cleaned more frequently following the steps above.
